Although the doctors give advantage to natural birth, the number of cesarean sections in our country are getting higher by the year

The cesarean section is an operation which brings many risks, but most of the pregnant women dream of it, due to prejudices of pain and shame. Regardless of the doctors’ warnings, there is still an opinion that this way the delivery is more comfortable, better and painless for the woman. All gynecologists agree that the cesarean section is a necessary evil and far from painless.

Possible risks

Giving birth by a cesarean section is not easier or more comfortable. Afterwards, the woman endures pain for days, because her uterus was cut, the bladder was moved and the stitched place hurts.

It is necessary to perform it under the supervision of medical personnel. The patient will receive infusion for three days, won’t eat because there is a danger of paralysis of the intestines. The women who were operated with a cesarean have a higher risk of embolism, and high temperature and infections are very common. There will be a bigger problem if there is a contamination of the wound from the cesarean than of the wound from episiotomy, the cut of the perineum which facilitates the natural birth.

The cesarean section increases the opportunity for the next baby to be born in the same way.

Only in emergency cases

Regardless of the doctors’ advices, the percentage of performed cesarean sections is way higher than 15%, which is recommended by the World Health Organization. In Macedonia, every fourth, and in America every third, woman has a cesarean.

The doctors decide to perform a cesarean during the delivery itself, if the natural delivery is not progressing, if the baby doesn’t have a good rotation, if there is a declining of heart beats. Furthermore, cesarean section is used if the baby is suffering (an indicator is the green amniotic fluid). An emergency cesarean section is performed if the mother’s health is in danger; the lining is prematurely separated; or if there is eclampsia, complications with the blood pressure. The doctors agree that the fear of natural childbirth and the pain are a bit overrated, because today there are ways to make the delivery painless – with proper breathing, massage, delivery in a bathtub and with the popular epidural anesthesia.

Higher mortality

The cesarean section is painless, but when the mother wakes up the pain she feels is the same as when the uterus is removed. The mortality rate of the women is ten times higher compared with natural childbirth. The most common complications are bleeding, high temperature, infection of the uterus, the urinary tract, as well as paralysis of the intestines from the anesthesia. There is also a risk of thromboembolism.

  • Women pregnant with tweens;
  • When there is a disproportion between the size of the baby and the wideness of the pelvis;
  • When the baby goes into the pelvis;
  • Irregular heartbeat;
  • Lack of oxygen to the baby;
  •  Premature separation of the placenta from the uterine lining;
  • Mother with a pathological fear of pain.

  • Frequent respiratory problems of the baby;
  • The baby is adapting slower than usual due to the anesthesia;
  • The risk of thrombosis and infection of the internal and external incisions is increasing;
  • Lactation problems;
  • Difficult breastfeeding and establishing of the first contact with the baby;
  • Recovery lasts longer;
  • Difficulty losing the fat under the incision;
  • Not a good choice if you want more than two children.
