“Drugarcinja” (“Friends”) tells the story about Martin and Rejhan who became real friends through prejudices and stereotypes. Irfan Martez from Kumanovo is author of the strip. Frosina Trendafilovska is the illustrator.

A motive for the strip was…

IRFAN MARTEZ The strip “Drugarcinja” is an illustration of the eponymous narrative written as a task in one of the workshops for creative writing of children’s’ narratives organized by Next Page Foundation. The narrative was chosen as one the best and by that got the opportunity of its publication. I got the inspiration for the narrative in the workshop and that was also a motivation to describe everyday action happening in my street because I live between two elementary schools in the centre of the town. For several years I have been watching a Roma woman who was taking her son from the Roma neighbourhood to the school in the centre of the town and was caring a besom every day. I assumed that she is cleaning in a building near the school.

Situations described in the strip also happen in practise…

IRFAN MARTEZ Discrimination, stereotypes and prejudices are factors Roma students very often face with. And not just them, but also students whose parents receive state benefits and who cannot afford a lot of things which are small things for other children. The strip presents the story about Martin and Rejhan who become real friends through prejudices and stereotypes. Unfortunately the cases of their overcoming are very rare, and very often they have a negative impact on Roma students because of which students leave education.

The strip is dedicated to…

IRFAN MARTEZ The strip is dedicated to non-Roma students from eight to ten years old. But that doesn’t mean that older cannot see and read it.

The story and the message of the strip will reach to…

IRFAN MARTEZ The story should reach among students from age eight to ten included in the educational process, the narrative is picturesque which makes the message from the action much easier to be understood. The purpose of the strip is to influence directly on the overcoming of stereotypical barriers and to contribute to their minimization and elimination, to raise the awareness among students from lower classes in elementary schools about prejudices and stereotypes towards Roma students. On an easy and understandable way students will have the opportunity to develop the feeling of tolerance through this strip. In addition, the purpose of the strip is to be used as a tool for animation and turning children’s’ interests towards illustrated art.

Prejudices could be overcome…

In order to overcome prejudices one should work on raising awareness among educational stuff in lower classes in elementary education, as a pillar for building students’ characters and in order for it to be transmitted on parents and through parents on children.

The strip will reach the public…

IRFAN MARTEZ With help from the Board for development of the education on languages of the communities  it is being planned for the strip to be distributed among elementary schools throughout Macedonia especially in multiethnical towns and schools.
